What is Thought Field Therapy?

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is a new technique for the rapid elimination of all types of emotional distress. It works rather like acupuncture by stimulating the body’s energy meridians. No needles are used — instead the client taps on various parts of the face and body with their fingers. The results are amazing as emotional problems frequently disappear in minutes.

How was TFT discovered?

TFT was devised and developed by Dr Roger Callahan PhD, one of America’s most distinguished and experienced clinical psychologists. After using conventional therapies like behaviour therapy for thirty years Callahan was dissatisfied with their poor results and became interested in an alternative therapy called Applied Kinesiology, which involves the body’s energy meridians.

In 1980 Callahan was treating a patient called Mary who had a phobia of water. After eighteen months of treatment with various therapies, including hypnosis and behaviour therapy, Mary was not much better. Then one day Callahan took a shot in the dark. He knew Mary described her fear as being felt in the stomach and he knew that the stomach meridian passed beneath both eyes. As Mary thought of her fear he tapped beneath one of Mary’s eyes. Instantly Mary’s phobia vanished and has stayed away to this day, almost thirty years later.

Callahan repeated this technique with other phobia sufferers and found it only worked with a small minority of patients. However he knew he was onto something and years of research, experimentation and development followed resulting in what we now know as Thought Field Therapy. Eventually Callahan discovered that most emotional problems — including anxiety, depression, phobias, traumas and obsessive compulsive disorder — could be cured by tapping on the correct parts of the body in the right sequence. He discovered menus of tapping sequences (called algorithms) which had an outstanding success rate (up to 80%) in treating various emotional problems. Dr Callahan had in fact tapped into nature’s own healing system—a series of ‘healing codes’.

How Does TFT Work?

TFT is based on a new theory about the cause of negative emotions. Conventional medicine assumes the mind and brain are the same thing and that emotional problems like anxiety and depression are caused by structural or chemical abnormalities in the brain which can only be corrected with drugs. However, for decades there has been an alternative view — that the mind and brain are separate.  Dr Callahan theorises that the mind is contained in a sort of field which surrounds the physical body in the same way that an electric field envelops a live conductor.  According to this theory, when we think of a problem we tune into a part of this field, called a ‘thought field’. It is rather like tuning a radio into a radio station. Furthermore Dr Callahan believes unpleasant emotions are caused by negative information patterns in thought fields which he terms ‘perturbations’. By tapping on the correct meridian points in the right order these perturbations are subsumed and the negative emotion disappears. In effect, with TFT we are picking the lock which controls negative emotions — we are entering a PIN code which turns off these problems.

What can TFT be used for?

TFT can be used to treat almost anything — anxiety, depression, phobias, addictions, pain, psychological trauma, grief, insomnia, jealousy, panic attacks and many other problems. In addition TFT can be used to treat other problems which were previously hard to treat with conventional therapies — such as jet lag and difficulty in visualising. In the last few years TFT has also been found to be helpful in treating cardiac problems through its beneficial effects on Heart Rate Variability. Some patients with postviral fatigue and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have also benefited from TFT. New uses for TFT are being discovered all the time. For example, it has been found that colds and flu can be successfully treated.

What are the success rates?

TFT algorithms are successful with 80% of clients. By using TFT diagnostic techniques the success rate increases to 95%. The highest success rate is achieved using Voice Technology which is successful with 97–98% of clients.

Is TFT painful in any way?

Not at all. No needles or other instruments are used, nor does it require you to talk at length about your problem, something that can cause considerable distress in itself.

What does a treatment involve?

The client is first asked to think about their particular problem which, amongst many others, can be an anxiety state, a phobia, a trauma, a loss, or a feeling of anger or of guilt. They are then asked to quantify their feelings on a scale of 0 to 10, with a 10 representing maximum distress. Next, they are asked to tap on his or her own body in specific places, or energy points, in a defined and precise order. Following the treatment the patient is asked, once again, to think about their problem as clearly and as negatively as possible. Typically, the patient reports that they cannot do so at all! At this point the patient is now free of their problem as they can no longer evoke the psychological distress they once experienced.  A cure has been effected.

What  conditions can TFT Help?

PHOBIAS

These irrational fears are absolutely terrifying to phobic people when they are forced, or courageously choose, to face their fears. The fear can be so great that it completely upsets their life and even the life of those in relationship with them. Fear of Flying is a phobia and being unable to speak in public is the No.1 most common phobia. Being terrified of spiders, snakes and mice are phobias. Agoraphobia means you are stuck inside because the outside world is too terrifying. Claustrophobia means you are afraid to be shut in a small space such as a lift or tube train. If you really hate going to the dentist and are also very frightened of needles, then these too are phobias. If walking along a cliff path or climbing a stepladder to reach the ceiling is much too scary, then you have Acrophobia. All these fears can be completely solved with TFT treatment, even if you have experienced the fear for as long as you can remember. Even if your fear was started some time ago due to a traumatic experience this also can be cured.

ANXIETIES, FEARS AND PANIC

We become anxious over very many situations in our lives and these worries often escalate into fears. If some of these fears can trigger a panic attack, then we may have an anxiety panic disorder which can completely destroy the quality of life. You may be very fearful over your situation at home and/or problems at work. When actually facing the situation, you may well find you panic and your ability to cope will desert you. You may panic when driving and have to join a motorway or drive over a high Suspension Bridge. Although these could well be phobias, they could be part of a panic disorder. These fears and panics can cause terrible debilitating anxiety – they can all be treated successfully with Thought Field Therapy.

ADDICTIONS AND OCD

Do you have an addiction to drugs or maybe, excessive alcohol?
Do you really want to give up smoking or lose weight and be free of the real risk to your health?

If you are obsessively or compulsively driven to engage in some activity or thought, or have a never-ending need to keep eating, drinking, smoking or taking drugs, this debilitating problem can be resolved.  If you suffer from these addictions and are looking for help, Thought Field Therapy would first, totally remove your desire to use the substances which are causing your problem.  Secondly, by using a very simple process, which takes only minutes each day, you will be able to treat yourself.  With your commitment to help yourself, by treating yourself with TFT as instructed for a few minutes each day for about three to weeks, the addiction or compulsion will be over without any withdrawal symptoms.

BEREAVEMENT & TRAUMA

The loss of a loved one, especially if it happens unexpectedly and suddenly, is totally devastating. Many people believe that they will have to live with the terrible grief for the rest of their lives, this is what they have been taught and they see no escape – except perhaps – time. “Time is a great healer” is the common thought. Time is NOT a healer but, eventually, it can be a repressor. With or without traditional psychological help, most people eventually learn to repress the unwanted emotional feelings associated with the memory of the lost, loved person. Although this can obviously be of help, it usually takes a long time to “bury” the upsetting feelings and in the meantime the poor person continues to suffer.

Some people never achieve it. The real problem with repression is, not being a cure, the grief can suddenly return in full force at any time, particularly when triggered by an experience or thought. The TFT treatment of bereavement is fast, gentle and gives an immediate calming effect because it removes the debilitating emotion attached to the memory.

It is important to realise that the continual distressing emotion is in no way part of the memory. It is quite separate and its removal in no way affects the memory of the lost person. In fact the reverse is true – people find after treatment that they begin to remember many details that had previously been forgotten. This is because, for the first time, the person is not remembering through a “fog” of grief and without this “block” the memories that now come to mind are those of all the times of joy and happiness which were shared and experienced with the loved one.

LACK OF SELF-WORTH

This is, in actual fact, an inner anxiety or fear which affects many people. The common feeling - and belief - is “I’m not good enough”, and/or “I won’t be able to do it”. Another version is “I don’t deserve to succeed,” and “It doesn’t matter how hard I try I’ll never manage to get there because I never have.” The cause, very often, is due to a “basketful” of fears over different matters, but the root cause can often stem from childhood traumas. It can be just one single trauma, often buried in the sub-conscious and not acknowledged because it was so deeply traumatic, but subsequently is destroying the whole of the person’s adult life; or, perhaps, a series of persistent put-downs which constantly undermined the child’s development of self-worth. “My parents were always telling me I would never succeed because I wasn’t good enough."

Both the present build-up of current fears and the long-held traumas, still playing their negative tape in adult life, can seriously impair a person’s ability to realise their true worth and totally block a successful and happy progress through life. TFT’s ability quickly and simply to remove such traumas can literally remove a great weight which otherwise stops a person realising their full potential. “I now feel taller” was the response of a client who had just experienced a TFT treatment to remove her fears and lack of self-worth.

Is TFT suitable for children?

Children are particularly responsive to, and indeed enjoy, the treatment. The simplicity and safety of TFT makes it especially suitable for nervous children who might find conventional approaches intimidating

What are TFT algorithms?

Developed using TFT causal diagnostic procedures, the algorithms are precise treatment sequences that are known to have a curative effect when applied to specific problems.

Does TFT have any side-effects?

By side effects, most people mean unpleasant side-effects. The answer is simply "No". However, recent evidence using Heart Rate Variability analyses has shown that successful TFT treatment has at least one very beneficial side effect - the rebalancing of the autonomic nervous system.

How successful are the techniques?

Using TFT algorithms alone a success rate of around 80% can be expected. Individual diagnosis by a diagnostically-trained practitioner raises this figure to around 90- 95%. With the use of Voice Technology™ the success rate approaches the ultimate. And all this within a few minutes. No other treatment presently available, conventional or complementary, can claim the same success rate, speed and completeness.

What proof is there that TFT has beneficial effects on the nervous system?

Recent clinical evidence obtained from the use of the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) test, which is not subject to placebo effect nor to researcher manipulation, has provided conclusive proof that successful TFT treatment also rebalances the sympathetic and parasympathetic contribution to autonomic nervous system function.

Can TFT really cure psychological problems?

A cure is defined variously as recovery or relief from disease or disorder, to restore to health, something that corrects, heals or permanently alleviates a harmful or troublesome situation, to free from something objectionable or harmful, to rectify an unhealthy or undesirable condition, successful remedial treatment.  As TFT can achieve all of the above it is reasonable to claim that it offers a cure. In a successful treatment all trace of the original problem disappears - by the patient's own report. In the event of a return of the problem, this doesn't mean that a cure was not achieved in the first place, only that it has been undone. For example, a person taking aspirin to cure a headache will, in all likelihood, be cured. If that person then suffers another headache a few days later it does not mean that the original dose failed to effect a cure, only that the headache has returned. Retreatment leads to cure once again.

How long does the effect last?

Once all aspects or complexities of a problem have been successfully treated (i.e. all perturbations have been removed from the Thought Field) and anything that may have undone the cure has been identified and eliminated, the effects appear to endure over time. Mary, Dr. Callahan's first case to be treated with TFT, remains free of her severe hydrophobia (fear of water) almost 30 years later.
